Silent
Wings Museum located in Lubbock, Texas is an excellent representation
of a little known piece of history which significantly contributed
to the allied success in WWII. This ‘unofficial’ Silent
Wings Museum site came into existence as a result of my having
worked at the Museum for over 2 years. My sister-site was
the official site that I created for the Museum - it too contains
good information regarding the Museum, some past newsletters,
printable brochures, and just general overall information
regarding the Museum. This
site; however, will give a sort of ‘behind the scenes’ account
of stories, events, and happenings that an outsider would
never be privy to; the type of information that will make
visiting the Museum up close and personal.
While working at the Museum, I had the opportunity
to meet many Glider Pilots; most did not view themselves as
the hero’s
they are. In my opinion, they are very modest in their admission
of the courage and bravery that it took to fly these glider
missions. I
have great admiration for these men – a very different
breed of men than this country knows today. It was never an
option not to go, not to fly, not to give it their all. It was
never an option not to defend their country, as it was their
duty and their honor to serve. While I have great respect for
today’s military and the roll they play in preserving
our freedom, from my vantage point, in talking with these WWII
veterans, I see a difference that is hard to express in words – a
difference that defines these glidermen so well. It is their
story and legacy that is captured and displayed so eloquently
at the Silent Wings Museum.
Please
read the information presented here with the understanding
that it is presented from my point of view, and of course,
intermingled with my opinions and thoughts. The stories are
related based on my interpretation and while every single
detail and nuance may not be related perfectly, it is as perfect
as I can remember. Also know that I have great respect for
the men and women who fought for my freedom and continue to
fight around the world for democracy, and this site is in
no way meant to deminish their great sacrificies.
